The presidency of Donald J. Trump has created some rather interesting moments in the history of Congress.
Case in point: In what many are now considering a very petty move, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) announced she was going to leave Congress during the State of the Union of address in protest of Donald Trump, The Washington Times reported.
Won’t “legitimize” it
Ocasio-Cortez does not look at Donald Trump as a legitimate president. She has bought completely into the notion that Trump stole the election in 2016 and will probably do the same in 2020.
“After much deliberation, I have decided that I will not use my presence at a state ceremony to normalize Trump’s lawless conduct [and] subversion of the Constitution,” AOC said ahead of Trump’s Tuesday speech.
She went on: “None of this is normal, and I will not legitimize it. Consequently, I will not be attending the State of the Union.”
Indeed, rather than do her duty as an elected official, she decided to do a live feed on Instagram to slam Trump as he gave the address.
Ocasio-Cortez was joined in her boycott by seven other Democrat lawmakers, including fellow far-left colleagues Reps. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Maxine Waters (D-CA).
While Trump’s SOTU speech is now being regarded as one of the greatest SOTU speeches of all time, overall, the decorum of the night was a mess.
It all started when Nancy Pelosi refused to follow protocol when she introduced Trump, dropping the traditional greeting in favor of a shortened introduction in a very pointed swipe at Trump.
Then, after the House speaker extended her hand, Trump refused to shake it. It’s not clear whether or not Trump actually saw her extended hand in the first place, but it’s worth noting that Trump did not shake Vice President Mike Pence’s hand either.
Pelosi was by far the worst violator, though, as she continued the childish feud throughout the speech. As Trump was speaking, Pelosi shuffled papers, made faces, rolled her eyes, and talked to herself.
Then, when Trump finished, she stood up and literally ripped his speech in half while he was still on the dais and on camera. All around, the antics of the far left during Trump’s historic speech will likely cause Democrats to pay dearly for their partisan posturing on Election Day — a well-deserved fate.
